Car Auction Prices - Keeping safe on eBay Motors

So you have been searching around on eBay for all sorts of trinkets, memorabilia and the like when you stumble across eBay Motors. You have already read a blog here or there about how you can save a bunch of money buying a car on eBay. So you begin searching around and happen to find your dream car and not only is it listed in your town, but the bid price is half it's value and the auction ends in five minutes! What now? Fear... That is the normal gut reaction to this situation. You may have heard these stories of saving money on eBay but is it safe? Here are 5 tips to finding the car you desire, keeping safe and saving thousands. (Oh yeah, and these are tips from somebody who has actually purchased a half dozen cars on eBay and learned some of the right, and definitely some of the wrong things to do):

Be specific in your search
Stay away from "non-auction" listings
Compare Distance and Price
Check Seller Ratings
Communicate

Don't waste a bunch of time looking through all the listings eBay has for vehicles. Generally there is somewhere between 40-50 thousands cars at a time. Search for vehicles that are ending soon in the area near your home. The words "no reserve" also let you know which vehicles are going to be sold no matter how little they go for. Second, don't bother with eBays other style listings such as classifieds because the only true deals are the ones listed under the "Auction" heading. Then when you have decided on the the type of vehicle desired, see how close to home you can purchase one. It can cost between $1000-$1500 to have a vehicle shipped across the country and should be factored into your bid price.

Once you have decided on a vehicle, always, and I mean always, check seller ratings and feedback. See what other customers of theirs have rated them and what they have to say. Don't ignore negative feedback. I did (against my better judgment) and almost ended up purchasing a complete lemon. And last but not least, if you win the auction, communicate promptly with the seller. Never send any form of payment before talking on the phone to a real live person and never send cash or wire transfer. eBay does have safeguards to protect you but the number one safeguard is to use common sense.
